Mike Gundy is paid pretty handsomely to go out and win 8.5 games a year, glad hand with boosters and hire smart people. He might be paid even more handsomely for these activities in 2016.Before we get to that, let’s look at where Gundy’s annual compensation falls nationally. Here’s the top 23 from earlier this year. Gundy is No. 22. Dabo Swinney is No. 26 (!)Screen Shot 2016-01-15 at 9.48.07 AMAnd now Bill Haisten on the rumblings in Stillwater. An Oklahoma State source indicates that university officials are considering a new contract for head football coach Mike Gundy. When the 2015 season concluded, four seasons remained on the eight-year contract signed by Gundy before the 2012 season. For established head coaches, the industry standard is a contract of at least five years.AdChoices广告This is such a volatile thing. Should Gundy be paid more than Art Briles? Does he deserve that? Maybe not right now, but he did a few years ago and he might three years from now.I’m interested to see how this plays out for Gundy. I would be surprised if something didn’t take place but an entirely new contract rather than just an extension of what he already has would be pretty intriguing. If I’m betting, I have to bet on the extension rather than a whole new deal.last_img read more

Number of Elite Recruits Visiting Oklahoma State for Texas Game

first_imgOklahoma State has a big weekend on hand with a number of big-time prospects making the trip to Stillwater to see the Pokes face No. 22 Texas for an early game matchup. Here’s a list of some of the prospects expected to be in attendance:Darrell Simpson – 2018 Justin Northwest offensive tackleSimpson is a five-star prospect with an incredible 6-7, 320-lbs frame. Oklahoma State offered last year and has been in the mix since, and he would be a game-changer for any team looking to bolster their offensive line. He has offers from all the top schools around here including Ohio State, and he could be a day-one starter.Spencer Sanders – 2018 Denton Ryan QBSanders is one of several QB’s expected to be on campus this weekend. The Denton Ryan standout is a four-star recruit with 13 offers including Texas A&M, South Carolina, Ole Miss and others.Casey Thompson – 2018 Southmoore QBThompson, the younger brother of former OU quarterback Kendal Thompson, is one of the highest rated recruits on campus this weekend. He already holds an offer from OSU, and could become the centerpiece of a recruiting class wherever he elects to go to school.Grant Gunnell – 2019 St. Pius QBGunnell is a 2019 QB who could be the top overall prospect in the 2019 class. With offers from Florida State, OSU, and several others.Brendon Evers – 2017 DT commit from BixbyEvers is one of several committed prospects who will be on campus today.Shamond Greenwood – 2017 WR commit from Lakeview CentennialGreenwood is one of the unheralded recruits of the 2017 class but he could be the next OSU great at wide receiver. He has the size at 6-foot-3 and the explosiveness to grow into a really productive Div. I prospect.Damion Daniels – 2018 DTDaniels is an elite defensive tackle recruit from Bishop Dunne and the younger brother of Darrion. To be honest, Damion is a longshot even though he holds an offer from OSU. He has already released a list of his top schools and included Texas, Colorado and Texas A&M among them, but OSU is on the outside looking in.Caden Sterns – 2018 DBSterns is another younger brother who will be on campus, the younger of Jordan Sterns. Caden is a receiver/defensive back who has an offer, and is still considering OSU. It’s a good opportunity for him to watch his brother show out and see a glimpse of his potential next school: He’s looking hard at both OSU and Texas.Thabo Mwaniki – 2017 DB commit from Denton GuyerMwaniki was one of several recent commits and another sleeper prospect from Denton Guyer. He’s a versatile athlete/safety/cornerback and will likely translate at cornerback at the next level.Owen Condon – 2018 OL (OKC)Condon doesn’t hold an offer from OSU, but he likely will soon. He’s a rising offensive line prospect from Bishop McGuinness in OKC.Marcus Hicks – 2019 DEHicks is a 2019 prospect from Kansas who is already an elite athlete who will play at defensive end at the next level, and already has the size and frame to potentially be one of the best in the country by the time he’s a senior. On my way to the OSU game today #GoPokes @TheOkiePokie pic.twitter.com/ASJtl5fZA9— Marcus Hicks (@harcus_micks) October 1, 2016 While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. CBS Sports Ranks Mason Rudolph as No. 5 QB in 2017 NFL Draft

Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. It’s never too early to take a peak at what the scouts and pundits have to say about NFL prospects. Even if it isn’t until April, lists are already being made about where prospects may be slotted in the 2017 NFL draft. And as it stands now, CBS Sports thinks highly of Oklahoma State’s signal caller Mason Rudolph.CBS Sports has him as the No. 5 QB to be taken off the board in next year’s draft, behind Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, Brad Kaaya, and Chad Kelly. One issue, however, is the place he is slotted. Although he is the No. 5 quarterback on the draft board for CBS, he is the No. 71 overall prospect, which would make him a mid-third round pick. The other quarterbacks are considerably higher on the board and are all projected first rounders. Watson (No. 1), Kizer (No. 4), Kaaya (No. 16), and Kelly (No. 32), are all very good prospects considered by many to be the upper echelon. Here’s what CBS Sports said about his strengths and weaknesses as a prospect:A durable, well-built prospect, Rudolph fits the mold of a prototypical NFL pocket passer with his size and arm strength. He generates easy velocity with a simple stroke and understands trajectory and touch, delivering a very catchable ball for his receivers. Rudolph tosses an accurate deep ball, whether he is dropping the ball in the bucket or firing a strike on a downfield post. His production is inflated due to the Oklahoma State offense, but it also showcases his confidence to test deep routes and distribute the ball all over the field. While his arm strength is above average, Rudolph needs to show better follow-through on his delivery and finish with his hips. In the Cowboys’ offense, he isn’t consistently asked to move from 1-to-2-to-3 in his progressions, often locking onto his initial target and staring through him with laser focus. Rudolph also needs to improve his anticipation to throw receivers open instead of waiting for them to come open before delivering the ball. He isn’t a poor athlete, but struggles to feel the pressure, shuffle his feet and reset as his tape doesn’t show many second–chance throws.Even with Rudolph a third round pick, he appears to be in a second tier of quarterbacks if he were to put his name in the draft for next year. Not surprisingly, there’s a pretty big paycheck discrepancy between first and third round draft picks. It’s still very early to really speculate, but Rudolph, at least at this point in time, could make himself a lot of money if he were to return for a senior year to improve his draft stock. But that’s a decision he’ll likely make after the season, and I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him strapping up the orange and black for one more year if his stock doesn’t improve considerably throughout this season.H/T @TravisB06052015/twitterlast_img read more

Oklahoma State Lands 2018 Linebacker Kolby Peel

first_imgOklahoma State has added its third commitment of the 2018 class this week as three-star outside linebacker Kolby Peel announced his decision to play college football for the Cowboys in 2018 on Thursday.Peel is a 6-foot, 210 pound prospect from A&M Consolidated in College Station. He chose OSU over other offers that included Cincinnati, Iowa State, Minnesota, SMU and others.Although listed at some recruiting services as a safety, Peel will fill a role at the star linebacker position with his coverage skills and experience covering large parts of the field in space. He has good size and has been productive in high school, recording 85 tackles, five tackles for loss, and four interceptions for A&M Consolidated in 2015 as a sophomore. With Peel in the fold, OSU now has commitments at both inside linebacker (Blake Barron) and outside linebacker (Kolby Peel) for 2018. He becomes the eleventh member of OSU’s 2018 recruiting class which sits at the top of the Big 12 rankings, and is nearing a top-10 national ranking. McGruder, Bundage Bring ‘Swag’ to Star Linebacker Role

first_imgMost of the attention surrounding Oklahoma State’s defense has been pointed at its inexperience at cornerback and the move of Ramon Richards from corner to safety — and how that somehow won’t exacerbate the situation. There’s one position on defense that isn’t getting much press but it might be one of the best Oklahoma State has on that side of the ball. We’re talking about Star linebacker.Mason Rudolph talked about two of its headliners after practice on Wednesday.“Kenneth [Edison-McGruder] has added some weight and he’s a very physical guy. Both him and Calvin [Bundage] love contact,” Rudolph said.AdChoices广告The duo make up 1A and 1B on Glenn Spencer’s depth chart for the Star LB — a hybrid linebacker/defensive back who supports the run, can cover a slot receiver/tight end and can blitz when the situation calls for it. It’s something of a tweener position but offers crucial versatility to a defense that plans to run both three-down and four-down schemes.OSU has used the position for years with guys like Josh Furman and Jordan Burton being impact players for the Cowboys from the Star role.A position changeWhen Mike Gundy made headlines before spring camp announcing that Ramon Richards was moved to safety full-time, the move of Edison-McGruder from safety to linebacker fell between the cracks for most.“We used Kenneth Edison-McGruder at linebacker during the bowl game,” said Gundy. “He’s developed a little bit and gotten a little bit thicker. He’s at a position where he can cover the No. 2 receiver and support the run some. If we can develop him in that position, it should help our defense.”Kenneth Edison-McGruder getting his Jordan Sterns on early. pic.twitter.com/7sLrUGsAS9— Pistols Firing (@pistolsguys) December 30, 2016 Tempered EnthusiasmKyle Porter and Kyle Boone caught up with Glenn Spencer during OSU’s golf media day and asked him about Bundage, his highly-recruited rookie who came into 2016 with a bang. Spencer made sure to temper any excitement citing some inconsistencies inherent to a true freshman season. But he eventually conceded. “But he [Bundage] hasn’t gotten close to the type [of player] he can be, which is encouraging,” Spencer said.He also made sure to mention McGruder, the projected starter at Star linebacker this fall.“You can’t talk about Calvin [Bundage] without talking about [Kenneth Edison-] McGruder,” said Spencer, ” because McGruder moving from the safety to that position, that has made that position probably one of the best on the team because I’ve got 1A and 1B there.“Both of those guys are going to play a lot and if I’m smart I’ll probably have a package where I get them both on the field at the same time.”Spencer, never the one to over-inflate a player’s ego, still couldn’t help but continue. “You see it. Collision speed. Contact speed.”“They’re always around the ball and they kind of bring that defensive chip and swag that we have and we bring to the table,” said Rudolph. “They do a great job and they are always keeping the offense on its heels.” While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member.
